Getting to Know Us

Our club was originally chartered in the Fall of 1946 as The Lions Club of Morristown
Tennessee. The name was later changed to The Morristown Lions Club. We are a part of
Multi-District 12 in the state of Tennessee. Our district; 12N; is made up of clubs all over upper
East Tennessee. This includes the area from Louden, Tennessee through Knoxville, Tennessee
to Bristol, Tennessee.  Only one of the original charter members is still alive and he is no longer
a member of the club. We have one member who has been with us for over 50 years adn
several others have been with the club for over 40 years.

We held our 60th anniversary dinner in October of 2006. Since that time we have lost two of our
longest serving members. One had been in the club for 56 years and the other had been with
us for over 40 years.

Our goal is to serve our community and surrounding communities as funds will let us. Our
primary goal is to provide those who cannot otherwise afford it with quality eye care. At the
present time we provide about 3 to 4 eye exams and eye glasses a month at no cost to the
individual. Our local Wal-mart vision center has made it possible for us to be able to do this.
Presently they provide us with exams at cost and eye glasses at a reduced cost. We can get an
exam and glasses for about $68 to $75 dollars each depending upon the prescription. We also
support several other local, district, state, and national organizations and charities. We also
support the community through what we call "Handy-man Projects". These projects consist of
building ramps for disabled persons, installing handrails for needy persons and other worth
while projects. Most of these projects are done for elderly and handicapped persons. We have
several fund-raisers per year in order to have the necessary funds to accomplish our goals and
projects.

One annual fund-raiser is an annual classic car and motorcycle show. It is held on the first
Saturday in June in Fred Miller Park in downtown Morristown. We had 132 automobiles, several
motorcycles, and about 12 to 15 vendors at our 2007 show. The show is called "Lion-a-Rama
08" and will be held on June 7, 2008. For more information about the show see the Lion-a-Rama
page on this site.

Our meeting place is at the local Ryan's Family Restaurant located on US-25E in Crockett
Square Shopping Center. This is directly across from Walter State Community College here in
Morristown. Morristown itself is located about 40 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee at
Interstate 81, Exit 8.
